Staying healthy as a senior

While 15.4% of Inland Empire residents are currently aged 65 and older, this age group will have the highest growth of any other age group in the region over the next 20 years. At IEHP, we are committed to helping our growing senior population thrive as they age.

To stay healthy and independent for as long as possible, senior health involves actions like:

  • Planning
  • Managing conditions
  • Preventing falls
  • Visiting the doctor for checkups
  • Getting vaccines
  • Exercising
  • Keeping up oral hygiene

Helpful resources for seniors

Advance Care Directive

Prepare for future health needs with an Advance Care Directive. An Advance Care Directive is a legal form that lets friends, family and medical providers know how you want to be cared for if you can’t speak for yourself. Filling out the form involves answering questions on quality of life and medical care.

An Advance Care Directive lessens your loved one’s burden and worry when making medical decisions for you.

Learn more about Advance Care Directives

We offer no-cost Advance Care Directive workshops.

To learn more, call IEHP Member Services at 1-800-440-IEHP (4347), Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-7 p.m., and Saturday-Sunday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

TTY users can call 1-800-718-IEHP (4347).

Health screenings

Yearly wellness visits help seniors learn about and prevent health problems early. Some important health screenings for seniors may include:

  • Colorectal cancer screening
  • Cholesterol screening
  • Diabetes screening
  • Blood pressure screening

For more information on health screenings, take a look at our Health Screenings page.

Vaccinations

Staying up to date on vaccines helps seniors stay healthy and prevent illnesses.

Aside from the yearly flu and COVID-19 vaccine, seniors may need vaccines to protect from shingles, pneumococcal and RSV.

Read our Vaccines for Adults page for more on recommended vaccines.
