As kids become teenagers, they gain more control over their own health. We aim to keep them healthy and prevent harmful behavior. For teens, this often means using tobacco, drinking alcohol, eating lots of junk food and having unprotected sex.

Instead, we want to guide them toward a healthy lifestyle. This includes:

  • Taking care of their mental health
  • Scheduling regular doctor visits
  • Getting needed vaccines
  • Eating a well-balanced diet
  • Exercising
  • Getting enough sleep

We hope this information helps your teen build healthy habits.

Did you know that one in five teens will have a mental health problem at some point? There are many reasons why teens often face mental health struggles. These may include the pressures of social media, doing well in school, fitting in with peers and finding who they are as a person. It can be hard to learn what resources and tools they have to care for their mental health.

We hope to make mental health care for teens more available with our Teen Mental Health Guide. This guide includes:

  • Facts on common mental health problems
  • How to notice the signs of a mental health problem
  • Ways to get better
  • Where to get help

Take a look, and feel free to print the guide out for your teen.

We suggest a checkup for your teenager every year. If possible, schedule it around their birthday. The doctor will check their development, screen for any health issues and review their vaccines.

Every IEHP plan covers preventive care, screenings and vaccines. These are given at no cost to you when visiting a doctor or clinic within your network.

Is it time for your teen’s checkup? Give their doctor a call today.

Between the ages of 16-18, teens should receive these vaccines to protect against meningitis and sepsis:

  • MenACWY
  • MenB

To keep them healthy, make sure your teen is up to date on their vaccines. For more details on vaccines, check out our Immunization Timing chart.
